Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Truth or Consequences
The counties and hotspots listed below represent well-known birding areas within the region and are provided for planning and reference. Specific trip locations vary based on season, access, and local conditions.
The Mesilla Valley Bosque SP and La Llorona Trail showcase riparian birding close to Las Cruces, while Leasburg Dam SP and Radium Springs highlight desert-edge wetlands. The Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks NM (Dripping Springs, Soledad Canyon, Aguirre Spring) rises dramatically east of town, offering desert slopes and pine-clad canyons rich in songbirds and hummingbirds. West Mesa WTP, Nutt–Hatch Playa, and the NMSU campus fields add open-country water and grassland birding, rounding out the county’s diversity.
River and reservoir habitats dominate here. Percha Dam SP and Caballo Lake SP (Riverside, Percha Flats, Eagle Point) draw waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors throughout the year, while Elephant Butte Lake SP (Marina, Rock Canyon, South Monticello Point) supports gulls, loons, and grebes in migration. The Las Animas Creek corridor offers riparian oases in an otherwise arid landscape, and Emory Pass and the Kingston area provide cooler forest birding at higher elevations.
White Sands NP (Visitor Center, Dune Life and Playa Trails) hosts specialized desert sparrows and Burrowing Owl, while Holloman Lakes and Tularosa Ponds concentrate waterbirds. Oliver Lee Memorial SP (Riparian Trail, Dog Canyon) transitions from desert foothills to lush canyon habitats. Lincoln NF (Cloudcroft, Karr Canyon, Osha Trail) adds montane forest species, and nearby Three Rivers Petroglyph Site and Mescalero Lake link cultural and natural attractions with excellent birding.

Spring (Mar–May): Migrating warblers, flycatchers, and shorebirds move through the Rio Grande corridor and desert basins. Warm days, cool mornings, and rapidly changing spring conditions.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Breeding hummingbirds, desert songbirds, and montane species are active from lowlands to higher elevations. Hot days in the basins are tempered by afternoon monsoon storms later in summer.
Fall (Sep–Nov): Southbound cranes, geese, and raptors concentrate at wetlands and reservoirs. Mild days, cool nights, and clear conditions make fall especially productive.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Large flocks of waterfowl and wintering raptors occupy refuges, fields, and playas. Sunny days, cold mornings, and occasional frost are typical.
