About Steffen Horwath

Steffen is a birding guide based in Durango, Colorado, with a focus on the diverse landscapes of the Four Corners region. He is drawn to birding as a way to better understand the environment, finding that birds offer a unique lens into the rhythms, health, and complexity of the natural world. What began as a curiosity has grown into a practice that blends observation, mindfulness, and a deep appreciation for place.

As a guide, Steffen brings an energetic and adaptable style to the field. He enjoys helping clients find target species while also creating space to slow down and explore how birds interact with their habitats. Whether working with beginners or experienced birders, he emphasizes both identification and the broader story: how birds connect to water, landscape, and even our own daily lives. With a background in environmental engineering and geology, he naturally weaves insights about the land itself into his guiding, adding depth to the birding experience without losing a sense of fun and discovery.

The Durango area offers an incredible mix of habitats, and Steffen especially enjoys guiding along the Animas River Trail, where riparian zones, cliffs, and forests come together in a single outing. It is a place where clients can bird while experiencing the richness of the region and its seasonal diversity by foot, bike, or car.

Steffen’s goal is for every outing to leave people feeling curious, inspired, and more connected to birds, landscapes, and the small details that make each place unique.
