Nick has had a lifelong interest in birds—from childhood backyard birding to aviculture to professional ornithological research. His first bird list dates back to 1997, when at just four years old he began matching species in a field guide to the birds visiting his Massachusetts backyard, with his mom recording each new sighting. After spending the latter half of his youth in Pennsylvania, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology and has been working in avian research ever since.
Since late 2016, Nick has served as a Research Specialist supporting population recovery efforts for the endangered Black-capped Vireo on Fort Hood. This long-term work has deepened his understanding of Texas’s habitats, migrant dynamics, and breeding bird communities. His central location has also allowed him to explore much of the state—and well beyond—whenever possible.
Nick is especially drawn to remote and under-birded areas, with a particular fondness for the rugged landscapes of the Trans-Pecos. Whether chasing specialties of West Texas, surveying oak-juniper woodlands, or following migration across the Hill Country, he brings a strong blend of research experience, field skills, and enthusiasm to each outing. Nick looks forward to helping birders of all levels explore the diverse avifauna of Texas.
