Jack’s birding journey began twelve years ago at the Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache, where a day in the field with his grandmother ignited a lifelong passion. Since then, he has grown into a dedicated birder, naturalist, and photographer, exploring every corner of New Mexico to experience the state’s remarkable biodiversity. He has birded widely across the United States, yet still feels there is nowhere quite like home.
Jack studies Biology, Statistics, and Ecology at the University of New Mexico, with an academic focus on avian migration. His coursework reflects his broader interest in conservation and the movement ecology of birds. He spends countless hours at migrant traps across the state, observing morning flight, hawk-watching, and studying how species use habitat during migration.
His field experience includes endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher surveys south of Albuquerque; working with Leiothlypis warblers in the sky islands of Texas; nest searching and point counts in central New Hampshire; and contributing to long-term data efforts across the Southwest. Each winter, he eagerly anticipates the Albuquerque Christmas Bird Count, where he has participated annually since childhood.
Jack is deeply committed to sharing birds with others. His guiding experience includes working with Sabrewing Nature Tours in High Island, Texas; serving as a Junior Instructor at Hog Island Audubon in Maine; and leading bird walks around Albuquerque with the Bird Alliance of Central New Mexico. Whether guiding across the country or in his home state, Jack finds the greatest joy in sharing meaningful moments with clients, friends, and his grandmother—the person who first opened the door to the birding world.
