About Ian Carlsen

Ian Carlsen is an enthusiastic birder who loves connecting people with the natural world. He began birding in earnest during the winter of 2013–2014 while filming a movie in far eastern Maine, and has been birding wherever life has taken him ever since.

He is among Maine’s top 25 birders on eBird and is steadily working toward the goal of seeing 400 species in the state. He has contributed writing to Vickery’s The Birds of Maine (Princeton University Press) and has given several presentations for Maine Audubon on Maine and its birds. He has also volunteered with the Maine Bird Atlas and the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project, and has participated in numerous Downeast pelagic trips.

His most recent passion is field recording. He enjoys taking his microphone and recorder into the field to capture bird vocalizations for the Macaulay Library, embracing the different challenges that come with recording compared to traditional birding. In particular, he enjoys seeking out places free from anthropogenic noise.
