About John Jonas

After many years of birding, it wasn’t until someone asked John Jonas if he could hear “that bird” (which he couldn’t) that he discovered he had high-frequency hearing loss. But it never slowed him down. With more than 18 years of experience, John is a dedicated birder and bird/wildlife photographer with a passion for helping people connect with the wonders of the avian world.

Known for his sharp eye and friendly, approachable style, John specializes in helping birders find their target species in Minnesota. He is deeply familiar with the habitats of northern Minnesota—including bogs, boreal forests, and mixed-wood landscapes—and blends his love of nature with a strong grounding in fieldcraft and photography. His goal is not only to help you spot the species you’re searching for, but also to deepen your appreciation for the moment and for the natural beauty the state offers. Whether exploring the rocky shores of Lake Superior, the winter quiet of Superior National Forest, or the renowned Sax-Zim Bog, John brings a sense of curiosity and adventure to every outing.

Outside of guiding, John frequently shares his expertise through bird photography presentations across Minnesota. He also volunteers annually at bioblitz events, driven in part by his fascination with other winged creatures—especially moths.

Reviews

I had an amazing time birding in Sax-Zim Bog with my guide John last weekend. From the start, John was incredibly attentive and made sure I had the best possible experience. He is not only a highly knowledgeable birder but also an incredible photographer with many years of experience. His photography tips were invaluable, helping me capture some truly stunning shots of the birds we encountered.
John’s expansive network of contacts was also a huge advantage—thanks to real-time alerts, we were able to chase down many of my target species, including multiple great gray owls around the bog. His expertise, patience, and passion for birding made the day unforgettable. I highly recommend Minnesota Birding Guides—if you’re looking for a fantastic birding and photography experience, John is the guide to go with! – Leah T.
