Christopher “Chris” Saenz is a Port Aransas local whose passion for birding began just five years ago—but has grown with remarkable speed. After attending a “Birding on the Boardwalk” program one morning, he took one look at a Whooping Crane and a White-faced Ibis through a spotting scope and was instantly hooked. That single experience launched him into a world that quickly expanded from birding around town to birding across all of Texas.
Alongside identification, Chris has developed a deep love for bird photography. He spends countless hours in the field, often waiting patiently for the perfect moment, refining his craft through experimentation and exploration. Photography has sharpened his eye, expanded his knowledge of Texas’s avian diversity, and made him a familiar presence in the local nature community.
Chris has led bird walks for the Port Aransas Nature Preserve and the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi, and he guides for the Birdiest Festival in America. He has also assisted on boat-based outings during the Whooping Crane Festival. His ability to find birds—common and rare alike—has earned him a respected reputation among regional birders and photographers. Notable local discoveries include a Black-whiskered Vireo, a Golden-winged × Brewster’s Warbler hybrid, and most recently, a Lucy’s Warbler.
An ambitious explorer of his home state, Chris dreams of finding 100 species in 100 different Texas counties. Whether helping a visitor see their first Whooping Crane or assisting a seasoned birder in tracking down a rarity, Chris brings enthusiasm, patience, and deep local knowledge to every outing.
