About Liam Hutcheson

Liam was born in Olympia, Washington, where he first began noticing birds at a young age. What started as curiosity quickly grew into an obsession as he and his mom traveled the state together, exploring Washington’s incredible natural beauty and diverse birdlife. By age 14, Liam was deeply immersed in state listing—and in 2023, he set the Washington state big year record with 378 species. As he jokes, it’s been downhill ever since.

Liam particularly enjoys pelagic birding and seawatching, along with county and patch listing. His favorite places to bird include the rolling hills and scablands of the Palouse, as well as the Olympic Peninsula, where he has gained extensive experience with some of Washington’s most productive migration hotspots and vagrant traps. Beyond vagrants, he has a special interest in underreported or difficult resident species at the county level. He relishes the challenge of pinpointing the one spot in a county where a species common just a few miles away can reliably be found—or tracking down some of Washington’s rarest and most cryptic birds.

Liam has compiled a Christmas Bird Count in the Chehalis Valley of Grays Harbor County for several years and participates in many others statewide. He has also contributed bird photography and written articles on birding for a local news organization, and writes for North American Birds representing Washington.

Reviews

“Liam was excellent. We saw all my target birds. Extremely knowledgeable and personable. I have no reservations in highly recommending him. I was very impressed with the overall experience.” – Gavin A.

“Liam Hutcheson did such a great job on our trip! I took four first timers with him and they are still talking about their experience. He was professional , patient and kind. He was very knowledgeable. Don’t hesitate to schedule with him.” – Marjorie M.

“Liam Hutcheson is an outstanding birder with a sharp eye and really good ear, and his ability to find good and tricky birds always impresses me. He’s exactly the kind of person you want as a bird guide — someone who knows where to find everything in Washington, and someone who takes it as a personal challenge to get you on your target species. More mature (and a much better conversationalist) than the average teenager, he’s good company and you’ll be glad you hired him.” – Jason Z.

“Liam H is an excellent bird identifier and bird-spotter. Stoked to see that he’s available to lead tours!” – Alex S.

“I fully recommend Liam Hutcheson as a birding guide. I’ve birded with him as a friend quite a bit. He knows Washington state and its birds like the back of his hand. As a 15-16 yr old, he set the state big year record, which involved coordinating with friends of all generations from all around the state, a testimony to his companionship, enjoyment of nature, and the fact that he’s a pleasure to hang out with. If you have target birds, he’ll have plan A, B, C, and D for you. And he’ll also fill you in on the status and micro-habitat preferences of that bird in the Pacific Northwest in general. And he’s conscientious, respectful, and sensitive to the needs of others. You’ll have a great time!” – Steve H.
