Nate is an Arizona native who developed a lifelong appreciation for the natural world, but became fully immersed in birding in 2020 after noticing a particularly bright Vermilion Flycatcher at a local park in Tucson. Since then, he has spent countless hours observing and listening for the species that make Arizona’s diverse landscapes so special.
He enjoys studying the biogeographical distribution and life histories of Arizona’s birds, often visiting areas with little to no eBird data to document what species occur there. Nate also explores the edges of known ranges to investigate seemingly suitable habitats and spends considerable time patch birding around Tucson, tracking behaviors and seasonal movements of local breeders, winter residents, and migrants.
Nate has conducted breeding bird point counts in mountain and grassland communities across the western United States for Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and has volunteered for numerous bird projects throughout southern Arizona. He currently serves on the Arizona Field Ornithologists Field Expeditions Committee.
