About TJ Mooney

TJ was born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where his father first sparked a love of the outdoors that would shape the rest of his life. Although he was never a devoted birder in his early adulthood, the pandemic inspired him to photograph and identify the birds in his own backyard, a hobby that quickly grew into a lifelong passion. Mentored by a close friend, TJ developed into a naturalist and conservationist as much as a birder, and his curiosity extends well beyond birds to butterflies and moths, native plants, mammals, and herpetofauna.

TJ thrives on finding birds hidden in plain sight by exploring the “off-the-beaten-path” locations across Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and the broader Mid-Atlantic that most visitors never see. He has a knack for exploring new habitats and uncovering the full richness of the avifauna in a given area, most notably when he rediscovered a childhood trout-fishing spot that turned out to be a stronghold for Golden-winged Warblers, along with many other species. That same instinct for discovery continues to drive everything he does.

Equally at home sharing knowledge as gaining it, TJ is driven by a passion for birding and conservation that spans the entire Mid-Atlantic region. He draws on deep local expertise and a unique ability to craft custom itineraries for virtually any scenario, whether you’re chasing a single target species, building a state list, or hoping to experience the full breadth of birdlife across Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and beyond.
