The counties and hotspots listed below represent well-known birding areas within the region and are provided for planning and reference. Specific trip locations vary based on season, access, and local conditions.
Morton County anchors the state’s southwestern corner with the expansive canyons, mesas, and prairies of Cimarron National Grassland. Cimarron NG–Middle Spring, Point of Rocks, and the Recreation Area provide access to riparian cottonwoods, rugged outcrops, and prairie flats used by sparrows, thrashers, and raptors. Additional sites, including the Tunnerville Work Center and Cottonwood Picnic Area, offer wooded draws that concentrate migrants and winter songbirds. The Boy Scout Area and nearby Point of Rock Ponds add wet meadows and water sources attractive to shorebirds and waders. Around Elkhart, the Elkhart Cemetery, Shelterbelt, & WTP create productive migrant stopover points in an otherwise open landscape. Collectively, these sites make Morton County an exceptional gateway to High Plains birding.
Ford County blends playas, reservoirs, and mixed prairie around Dodge City. Ford State Fishing Lake and Hain State Fishing Lake provide woodland edges, cattail stands, and open water for ducks, grebes, and winter raptors. Networks of playa lakes along Yucca Road and units such as Herron Playa WA and Wild Turkey Playa WA support migrating sandpipers, phalaropes, and plovers in wet years. Within Dodge City, the city parks offer reliable access to waterbirds and passerines moving through shelterbelts and cottonwood groves. Collectively, these varied habitats make Ford County a productive blend of urban and prairie-centered birding.
Finney County offers diverse habitats around Garden City, from urban lakes to extensive sage and shortgrass prairie. Finnup Park and the adjacent Lee Richardson Zoo provide forested edges, ponds, and manicured grounds that concentrate migrants and wintering sparrows. The Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area features sagebrush flats, sandhills, and open prairie that support sparrows, quail, and raptors. Reservoirs and wetlands such as Concannon State Fishing Lake and playa lakes along KS 156 & 6 Mile Road attract shorebirds, teal, and waders during seasonal movements. Valley View Cemetery and Forest Park Lake add additional tree cover and water sources within Garden City. Collectively, these sites make Finney County central to the region’s mixed prairie and wetland birding.
