Far Western Kentucky, known as the Jackson Purchase, is defined by expansive floodplain wetlands, backwater sloughs, and two massive reservoirs framed by the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. These river valleys form major migration corridors and winter staging grounds for geese, ducks, and raptors, while shallow impoundments host impressive shorebird movements during spring and fall. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley add vast open water, forested shorelines, and sheltered embayments that support loons, grebes, and wintering Bald Eagles.
