Year-round residents such as Spotted Owl, Marbled Murrelet, American Dipper, Varied Thrush, Steller’s Jay, Pacific Wren, and Chestnut-backed Chickadee reflect the state’s deep conifer forests and cool coastal climates, while open interiors host species like Greater Sage-Grouse, Clark’s Nutcracker, and Mountain Bluebird. During the breeding season, Oregon is notable for aerial and montane specialists including Black Swift, Flammulated Owl, Calliope Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Vaux’s Swift, Hermit Warbler, and Green-tailed Towhee, alongside grassland and shrubsteppe birds such as Sage Thrasher and Long-billed Curlew. Outside the breeding season, the Pacific coast and interior valleys attract wintering seabirds and northern visitors including Tufted Puffin, Rhinoceros Auklet, Ancient Murrelet, Surfbird, Harlequin Duck, and Golden-crowned Sparrow, highlighting Oregon’s importance as a year-round crossroads for forest, desert, and marine birdlife.
